GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team looks for its first win of the 2010 campaign, taking on Cleveland State and Liberty at Minges Coliseum at 1 and 7 p.m., respectively, to end the East Carolina Classic.
Junior Amanda Lutzow put down 10 kills for the Pirates last night but Charlotte took a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-22) victory. The match was the second of the East Carolina Classic as Cleveland State downed Liberty in an entertaining 3-2 affair earlier in the day.
Five of the Pirates' eight newcomers experienced action in the contest as freshman Shelby Beasley picked up a squad-best 13 digs in her collegiate debut while fellow rookie Andrea Queck recorded 20 assists. Additionally, junior transfer Jackie Varnum racked up a team-high two block assists.
The 49ers enjoyed a 37-29 advantage in kills while also committing just 13 errors to hit .258 for the match. The Pirates did not hit as well, racking up 28 errors for a .009 mark. Charlotte also had the upper hand in digs (39-38) and blocking (6.0-3.0).
In the first match of the day yesterday, Jackie Dabbelt recorded 17 kills in her first career collegiate match for the Vikings and Kara Koch added 14. Dabbelt, who redshirted last season, committed just three errors on 36 attempts, hitting .389 for the match.
The Vikings hit just .186 in the contest, but saved their best for the last set, totaling a .321 attack percentage with 11 kills and just two errors in 28 attempts.
Senior Karyl Bacon led the Lady Flames, which hit .161 in the tilt, with 18 kills. Additionally, libero Kelly Haseman led the team with 22 digs, while Jade Craycraft notched a match-high 50 assists in her first appearance in a Liberty uniform.
East Carolina continues its campaign next weekend, traveling to Newark, Del. for the University of Delaware Invitational. The Pirates face Rutgers Friday, Sept. 3, as well as the host Blue Hens and Sam Houston State the next day.
