
ECU Finishes Third at VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. --- The East Carolina men's golf team fired a three-round total of four-over 868 (282-289-297) to finish in third-place at the 2010 Verizon VCU Shootout which concluded Tuesday afternoon at the Hermitage Country Club.
Junior Harold Varner was the Pirates' top scorer in the tournament as he finished in fifth-place at three-under 213 (70-67-76). Varner was tied for the individual lead after two rounds, but shot four-over Tuesday to finish five strokes behind individual medalist Nate McCoy of Iowa State.
McCoy shot one-under in the final round to edge UNC Greensboro's Robert Hoadley by one stroke. McCoy carded a 54-hole tally of eight-under 208 (69-68-71), while Hoadley finished with a seven-under 209 (71-70-69). Wake Forest's Evan Beck fired a five-under 207 (71-71-69) to earn a third-place finish followed by Thomas Bass of UNC Wilmington at four-under 212 (70-69-73) in fourth-place just ahead of Varner.
Varner was one of three Pirates in the top 14 individually as junior David Watkins tied for 10th at even-par 216 (68-74-74). Senior Warren Straub finished one stroke behind his teammate tied for 14th. Straub opened the tournament with a two-under 70 and followed that up with an even-par 72. However, he fired a three-over 75 in the final round to finish at one-over 217.
UNCW had four players finish among the top 17 to earn the team title for the second consecutive season. The Seahawks finished at two-under 862 (288-276-298) as team to edge 12th-ranked Wake Forest by one stroke (285-289-289=263).
The Pirates finished ahead of a trio of top-50 teams including 10th-ranked Charlotte and 27th-ranked UNCG. ECU bested the 49ers by six strokes and the Spartans by seven. They also finished eight strokes ahead of No. 33 Liberty.
ECU will next play in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. The tournament hosted by North Carolina State University will be contested at the par 71 Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C. The Pirates finished tied for eighth-place last season.
