GREENVILLE, N.C. --- In preparation for the upcoming 2010-11 season, the East Carolina swimming and diving team will hold its annual Purple-Gold meet Friday, Oct. 1, at Minges Natatorium. The intrasquad meet is set to begin at 3 p.m. and is open to the public.
"This is always a fun meet for our kids," head coach Rick Kobe said. "They enjoy competing against each other in dual meet setting and of course we as coaches use this as another opportunity to evaluate them and get them into a racing mindset."
Friday will officially jump-start the 2010-11 season as ECU is scheduled to participate in 11total events, including prestigious Nike Cup in November and the Conference USA Championships at the end of the year.
"Our dual meet season is always tough," Kobe said. "We open up against North Carolina, but our big focus during the fall semester is the Nike Cup. We will take approximately 40 athletes to compete against some of the top programs from the ACC, SEC and across the country.
"We have tough dual meets against South Carolina and Old Dominion here in the spring that we'll have to be ready for. Then our main focus in the spring is the Conference USA Championship meet in Houston."
Both the men and women's team return over two dozen lettermen from a year ago. The ladies, who finished second at the 2010 Conference USA Championships, return 27 letterwinners and the men's squad welcomes back 26 returnees.
The two teams accumulated a combined record of 15-6 last season, including a 27th consecutive non-losing season by the men's team.
Preseason training continues next week before the Pirates open up their season on the road at North Carolina. The Pirates face the Tar Heels at 4 p.m. on Oct. 8 at Koury Natatorium.
