GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jontae Sherrod scored a career-high 24 points to lead East Carolina to a 76-67 victory over Tulane on Saturday.
The Pirates (9-7, 1-1 Conference USA) shot 61.9 percent from the field (13-of-21) in the second half in their first home game since Dec. 7 and improved to 7-1 at home this season.
East Carolina led for the final 18:03, but couldn't pull away from Tulane (12-5, 2-2).
After trailing by three at halftime, 31-28, ECU opened the second half with a 16-6 run. Darrius Morrow scored the Pirates' first four points and Corvonn Gaines tied the game at 33-all with a free throw. Erin Straughn then sank a 3-pointer to put them up 36-33.
Jamar Abrams scored the final five points of the run for ECU, capping the outburst with a 3-pointer to put the Pirates up 44-37 4:02 after intermission.
ECU held the lead for the next 10 minutes before Jordan Callahan tied the game at 59 with 5:45 to play.
The Green Wave tied the score four times over the next 90 seconds before the offenses disappeared.
Sherrod's two free throws with 1:25 left, but ECU ahead for good after both teams failed to scored for nearly three minutes after Kendall Timmons tied the game with two free throws with 4:17 to play..
Two more free throws from Morrow pushed the lead to 71-67 and the Green Wave didn't score in the final minute. Morrow finished with 14 points.
East Carolina made 10-of-12 free throws in the final four minutes and held Tulane to 0-for-8 shooting from the field.
Straughn grabbed four of his game-high nine rebounds in the final minute.
Callahan led Tulane with 22 points, David Booker had 19 and Timmons scored 10 points to reach double figures for the 16th consecutive game.
After falling behind 7-2, the Pirates countered with a 15-2 run over a six-minute stretch on four consecutive 3-pointers. Abrams started the run with a triple that was capped by a layup by Gaines to give ECU its largest lead of the first half, 17-9, with 11:17 to play.
Tulane answered with a 19-2 run of its own as they held ECU to just one field goal for more than seven minutes. The Green Wave led by nine, 30-21, with 3:46 remaining in the first half.
ECU closed the first half by scoring seven of the final eight points, a 3-pointer from Robert Sampson and two free throws each by Sherrod and Brock Young.
The Pirates return to action Monday, Jan. 17 against UAB. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
