GREENVILLE, N.C. - Southern Miss used a 14-6 run over a five-minute stretch late in the second half to outlast home standing East Carolina, 84-77, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum Wednesday night.
The game featured 10 ties and 11 changes, the final of which came when Angelo Johnson buried his second consecutive 3-pointer with 9:27 to play to put the Golden Eagles (15-5, 4-3 Conference USA) ahead by three, 56-53. ECU (11-9, 3-3 C-USA) tied the game at 58 less than a minute later on a layup by Darrius Morrow, who led the Pirates with 18 points.
Sai'Quon Stone's ensuing three-point play gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. It wasn't until Gary Flowers' jumper with 4:58 to play that the Pirates trailed by more than one possession. ECU got within four twice in the final minute, but never made it a one-possession game.
The Pirates led by three, 53-50, when Johnson sank his first of two consecutive 3-pointers. They were his only field goals on the game.
East Carolina led much of the first half, but never by more than six. Corvonn Gaines drilled a 3-pointer with 2:54 to play in the opening half, which put the Pirates up four. However, the Golden Eagles closed the half on a 10-4 run and led by two at halftime, 37-34.
Flowers led six Golden Eagles in double figures with 17 points. Stone and freshman D.J. Newbill had 13 each, while Maurice Bolden and R.L. Horton added 11 apiece. In addition to his two 3-pointers, Johnson made four free throws to finish with 10 points.
Jontae Sherrod finished with 16 points, while Brock Young scored 13, Gaines matched his career-high with 12 and Jamar Abrams had 10.
The Golden Eagles shot 55.1 percent from the field (27-of-49), 54.5 percent from 3-point range (6-of-11) and 80 percent from the free-throw line (24-of-30).
East Carolina also shot the ball well, connecting on 51.2 percent of its shots (22-43) and 79.4 percent of its free throws (24-30). However, the Pirates were well below their 38.1 percent shooting average behind the arc, making just 6-of-20 attempts (.300).
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, Jan. 29 against Houston. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum and will be televised throughout Eastern North Carolina on WITN and regionally on CSS.
