Silent Auction Brings In Thousands For Cancer Patients

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- As a part of the Coaches Vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend, the East Carolina men's basketball team hosted a silent auction on Jan. 29 and raised more than $9,000 for Beau's Buddies Cancer Fund, a charitable organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of patients and their families actively fighting cancer in Eastern North Carolina.
The auction featured memorabilia, travel packages, gift certificates for local goods and services as well as 'experiences.' It included autographed sneakers worn by ECU Coach Jeff Lebo during the Pirates' win over Houston Saturday, an autographed ECU football helmet signed by coach Ruffin McNeil and an autographed jersey by Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard. The top selling item was a framed Tennessee Titans jersey autographed by former ECU running back Chris Johnson, which brought a high bid of $825.
"I'm so proud of the Pirate Nation and how they stepped up to support this cause," Lebo said. "This was a real testament to our fans and those in our community. We're grateful and fortunate to be able to help those affected by this dreadful disease."
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
