HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A shorthanded East Carolina squad came up empty at Southern Miss Friday, dropping a 3-0 decision at Reed Green Coliseum. The Pirates fall to 2-15 overall and 0-8 in league play while the Golden Eagles are 8-11 and 2-5.
Senior Amanda Lutzow posted her second double-double of the season, putting down 10 kills and collecting 10 digs. Shelby Beasley also picked up double-digit digs, leading ECU with 13. Running the offense for the ninth consecutive match was Zarah Cecich, who handed out 21 assists.
Southern Miss ran an efficient offense, hitting .307 with 52 kills on 127 attempts. The Golden Eagles also held the upper hand in digs (65-55) and total blocks (7.0-4.0).
ECU kept it close and trailed 4-3 at the outset of the first frame, but Southern Miss went on a 5-1 run to establish some breathing room. Britney Roper brought the Pirates back to within four at 15-11 with a kill, but the Golden Eagles would allow East Carolina no closer as they cruised to a 25-14 set victory.
With Southern Miss ahead 13-6 in the second interval, the Pirates scored two-straight points to keep the home side in sight. However, ECU was able to score just six more points as the Golden Eagles capped off another 25-14 frame win with a Kelsea Seymour kill.
Like the previous two sets, Southern Miss broke open a close early score and established a 13-7 lead - forcing the Pirates to call timeout. The Golden Eagles didn't slow down, racing all the way to the end and clinching the match 25-11.
East Carolina returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. when it travels to New Orleans for a matchup with Tulane at Fogelman Arena.
