GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina received a pair of double-doubles from its post players Sunday as the Pirates cruised to a 109-30 victory over St. Andrew's at Minges Coliseum. ECU evens its record at 1-1 while the Knights' season opened with the contest.
The 79-point margin of victory smashed the program record of 66 which was set twice against UNC Greensboro and Manhattan during the 1979-80 season. East Carolina also reached 100 points in a game for the 21st time and first since a 102-40 triumph against Virginia Union last year.
Junior forward Britny Edwards continued her solid early-season play, producing her first double-double in a Pirate uniform with 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the floor and 10 rebounds - seven of which were on the offensive glass. Teammate and freshman Tatiana Chapple also excelled in a number of statistical categories, earning the first double-double of her collegiate career at 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Columbus, Ohio native also posted five assists, five steals and no turnovers.
ECU had six total players in double figures offensively as Chareya Smith, Kristine Mial, Celeste Stewart and Shala Hodges put in 17, 16, 11 and 11 respectively. Other standout performances included seven steals by Stewart, a career high, and seven assists from senior Bryelle Smith. Chareya Smith just missed a double-double as she pulled down eight rebounds (five offensive).
A tenacious defensive effort resulted in 33 steals for East Carolina which matched the school record set against NC State Jan. 22, 1973. The 109 points scored tied the third-most in program history and were the most since East Carolina scored the same number against UNC Greensboro on Jan. 29, 1980. The 47 made field goals were the second most, falling just one short of the school record, as were the 93 shots the Pirates attempted.
After a dismal shooting performance in Friday's contest at College of Charleston, ECU rebounded to shoot 51 percent. East Carolina also owned the boards, recording 52 rebounds of which 28 were offensive. The Pirates limited St. Andrew's to 12 field goals made, 28-percent shooting and four assists. ECU also forced 47 turnovers and scored 73 points off those miscues. A majority of East Carolina's points occurred in the paint (76) while the Pirates also out-scored the Knights 43-0 on the fast break.
The teams started the contest slowly as ECU edged out to a 5-2 lead at the first official timeout. St. Andrew's rallied to within a point at 7-6 when Rebecca Bryant hit a jumper, but the Pirates put together a 19-0 run over the next 5:26 to pull ahead by 20.
The advantage grew to 30 at the 3:55 mark with Edwards dropped in a jumper in the paint and East Carolina would cruise to a 55-11 halftime lead. ECU held the Knights scoreless for the final 5:21 of the period.
Edwards paced the Pirates with 16 points in the first 20 minutes while Chapple also reached her 11-point contest output. The freshman picked up six rebounds and all of her five steals in the half while Bryelle Smith produced six of her seven assists. East Carolina hit 24 of its 46 attempts from the field to shoot 52 percent and held a slim 23-18 advantage in rebounding. The Pirates also took good care of the basketball, committing just four turnovers.
A layup by freshman Janesha Ebron pushed the ECU lead to 51 at 71-20 with five minutes gone in the second half. The Knights did not threaten the rest of the way as the Pirates reached the century mark on a Katie Paschal free throw conversion.
East Carolina returns to action Thursday, Nov. 17 when it plays host to Virginia Intermont. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the game is the first of a doubleheader with the men's squad which takes on Chowan at 7:30.
