GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina plays its second road game of the campaign Sunday, traveling south for a matchup with in-state and former CAA rival UNC Wilmington at Trask Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Pirates enter the game having won their last two contests against non-Division I teams. Junior Shala Hodges exploded offensively against Virginia Intermont Thursday, scoring a career-high 28 points and hitting five 3-point field goals. She also added five steals and three assists. Additionally, freshman Dana Jones netted 19 points while senior Chareya Smith dropped in 10. ECU looks to avenge an 83-72 setback to the Seahawks last season at Minges Coliseum.
The Seahawks return home with a 0-3 mark on the young season after suffering an 83-64 setback at Atlantic Coast Conference member NC State on Wednesday.
Sophomore Alisha Andrews established a new career high with 23 points to guide a Seahawks lineup that kept pace with the Wolfpack until NC State closed out the contest with 22-7 run to pull away. UNCW shot a sizzling 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from three-point range against the Wolfpack, but were unable to overcome 24 turnovers and NC State's 51-33 advantage on the glass.
The Series: UNC Wilmington
East Carolina and UNC Wilmington meet today for the 50th time in a series that dates back to 1978. The Pirates hold a 29-20 advantage and have won six of the last nine meetings. However, the Seahawks have taken three of the last six affairs. ECU was a charter member of the Colonial Athletic Association and played UNCW 34 times while the two schools were conference mates.
ECU Against The CAA
East Carolina holds an all-time mark of 137-133 (.507) against the current members of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pirates have squared off against Drexel (2-0), George Mason (24-21), Georgia State (1-0), Hofstra (1-0), James Madison (26-29), Northeastern (1-0), Old Dominion (8-42), Towson (1-0), VCU (13-10), William and Mary (31-11) and UNCW (29-20). The Pirates will face off against VCU and Delaware later this season.
Double Trouble - Freshman Style
With her double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) against St. Andrew's, freshman forward Tatiana Chapple is the first ECU player to record a double-double in her rookie season since Jean Best scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds versus UCF on Feb. 15, 2009.
Tenacious "D"
The Pirates' defense is getting it done early in the season as East Carolina has held all three of its opponents under 60 points and two under the 35 mark. The 30 scored by St. Andrew's are the fewest allowed since Presbyterian netted 28 on Nov. 21, 2008. ECU is also averaging 41.0 turnovers forced and 25.3 steals in its first two outings this year.
The Starting 10
It seems like the Pirate bench gets deeper with each passing season and is an extension of the starting five. There is some truth to that statement, as East Carolina's bench has outscored its opponents' benches in 75 of the last 96 games.
When Making 30...
East Carolina converted 47 field goals against St. Andrew's, marking the 29th time since the start of the 2006-07 campaign that the Pirates have made 30 or more baskets in a single game.

ECU kicks off a four-game homestand Nov. 26-27 by welcoming Elon, Delaware State and Robert Morris to Minges Coliseum for the East Carolina Thanksgiving Tournament. The Pirates will play the Hornets and Phoenix during the two-day event.
