CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Miguel Paul scored 18 points and Darrius Morrow 15 as East Carolina rolled to a 67-47 victory over Appalachian State at Time Warner Cable Arena Tuesday night.
The Pirates (3-1) held the Mountaineers to just 31.8 percent shooting (14-44) from the floor, including 26.1 percent in the opening half (6-23). East Carolina forced more turnovers (12) than it allowed field goals in the first half, scoring 11 points off Appalachian's miscues.
ECU rushed out to an 8-0 lead behind a 3-pointer from Paul and five points by Morrow. Corvonn Gaines stretched the lead to double figures for the first time, 13-3, with a 3 from the wing as the shot clock expired. The Mountaineers countered with a 12-6 run to cut the Pirates' lead to four.
Consecutive 3s from Paul and Shamarr Bowden pushed the lead back to 10, 25-15, with 4:36 left in the opening stanza. The Pirates then took its biggest lead of the half as Morrow scored underneath with under a minute remaining for a 30-17 halftime advantage.
Although they only shot 41 percent in the first half, the Pirates made nearly twice as many shots as the Apps, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. ECU converted a total of 7-of-12 attempts from behind the arc for 58.3 percent after going a combined 10-of-47 in its two previous games combined.
The Pirates made four of their first five shots to start the second half, building a 20-point advantage, 42-22, in less than four minutes. ECU never led by fewer than 16 points in the final 17 minutes.
Robert Sampson scored five straight points to give ECU its first 20-point lead with 16:15 to play, making a 3 in front of the Pirate bench then converting a lay-up. Sampson finished with nine points and a team-high six rebounds.
Jamaal Trice did his best to keep the Mountaineers (2-2) in the game, scoring 22 of their 30 second half points. Trice finished with a game-high 27 points. He made six of their eight field goals after halftime.
ECU made 13-of-22 field goal attempts following intermission, scoring 16 points in the paint. The Pirates finished with a 34-30 rebounding margin. They also made the most of their free throw opportunities, converting 12-of-16 from the charity stripe. Appalachian State made just 13-of-25 foul attempts.
East Carolina returns to action Saturday, Nov. 26 against Chowan College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
