Furman Halts Lady Pirates' Win Streak, 5-2

GREENVILLE, S.C. - For the second-straight meeting in as many years, Furman rebounded from a doubles setback by claiming five of six singles matches to hand East Carolina a 5-2 non-conference defeat in women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center.

East Carolina (5-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage by capturing the doubles point. After Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier opened with an 8-1 victory over Margaret Boyette and Katherine Oudin at the No. 1 position, Natalie Collins and Petra Vogel followed with an 8-4 win over Lauren Kline and Michele Stanford at No. 2 to clinch the tally. Monica Arguello and Amanda Murray prevented a sweep by posting an 8-6 decision against Manon Bissat and Neena Wanko to complete the doubles session.

In singles play, the Paladins (2-4) claimed the three opening matches as Arguello (No. 1) handled Cook 6-2, 6-0, while Oudin (No. 2) dismissed Vogel 6-0, 6-2 and Boyette (No. 4) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over LePottier.

After Bissat produced a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Susan Bitetti in a No. 6 matchup to push her spring record to 4-0 and cut the deficit to 3-2, Murray sealed Furman's win by outlasting Wanko 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in a No. 5 battle. Kline fought past Collins 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 3 to produce the Paladins fifth and final point.

East Carolina will close out its three-day, four-match road trip with a doubleheader Saturday. The Lady Pirates will battle North Carolina A&T in Greensboro at 10 a.m. before heading to Durham for a 4 p.m. meeting against North Carolina Central.
