Stewart Wins Second C-USA Title

HOUSTON --- East Carolina senior Jenna Stewart won her second individual title of the 2011 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championship and Invitational with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday as competition concluded at Houston's CRWC Natatorium on the university's campus.
The Lady Pirates took home runner-up honors with a team score of 676.50, while Rice tallied 702 points to hoist the championship trophy. Five-time defending champion SMU claimed third-place (658) followed by Houston (522), Tulane (313.5) and Marshall (279) to round out the championship standings.
Stewart became East Carolina's first conference champion in the 100-yard freestyle since Hillary Stokes won the event at the 1995 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. Stewart posted an NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 49.73, breaking her own ECU record.
She also won the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday.
Freshman Meaghan Rauscher took home the silver in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.36 just edging out Rice's Erin Mattson (2:01.87).
Sophomore Katie Yamamoto and freshman Taylor Edwards place fifth and sixth, respectively in the women's platform diving competition.
Junior Kylie Francis wiped nearly two seconds off her preliminary qualifying time in 200-yard backstroke to claim a fifth-place finish in the finals (2:00.61), while classmate Kelsey Brosi placed eighth (2:03.73).
Brosi joined Stewart, Natalia Favoreto and Holly Berenotto in the 400-yard freestyle relay to record a NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 3:24.49 with third-place finish. The foursome finished just 0.16 out of second-place.
In the Men's Invitational, East Carolina finished in third-place with 647 points behind first-place Hawaii, who dominated the event with a total of 1,018.5 points. SMU came in second with 860.5 points and North Dakota finished in fourth with 453.5 points.
ECU claimed two of the top three spots in the men's 1650-yard freestyle. Junior Jonathan Bailey (15:40.15) finished nearly four seconds in front of teammate Thiago Cavalcanti (15:44.08) to earn second-place, while Cavalcanti touched 0.67 ahead of Hawaii's Steve Allnut to finish third.
The Pirates also claimed the silver and bronze in the 200-yard butterfly with Andrew Stoker coming in second (1:48.26) and J.D. Flanagan placing third (1:48.43).
Freshman Attila Kiraly almost captured his second individual title, but had to settle for second-place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.17.
Senior Andrew Johnson received bronze medalist honors in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:01.30
