GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jontae Sherrod scored 23 points, including 19 in the second half, to lead East Carolina over UCF, 68-61, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum Saturday night. The win gave the Pirates their first-ever season-series sweep of the Knights, who they defeated in Orlando earlier this season, 74-62.
With the victory the Pirates (13-10, 5-4 C-USA) are over .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2002-03 when they were 12-11 through 23 games.
Despite being whistled for two fouls in the first minute and playing only six minutes in the first half, Darrius Morrow finished with 15 points, including 11 in the second half. Jamar Abrams, who was 2-for-17 the last two games, went 4-of-9 from the floor and scored 12 points.
The Knights (14-7, 1-7) hit 38.5 percent (20-for-52) of their shots, while the Pirates made 37.9 percent (22-for-58) of their attempts, including 9-of-25 3-pointers (36 percent). UCF outrebounded East Carolina 45-34, but the Knights had 18 turnovers as the Pirates scored 18 points off their mistakes.
The first half featured five ties and seven lead changes, the last of which occurred on a 3-pointer from Marcus Jordan. The Knights ended the first half on an 8-3 run and held a five-point lead at halftime, 39-34. However, there was only one lead change in the second half.
East Carolina pulled ahead after halftime as it went on a 22-5 run, which included 15 points from Sherrod. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Sherrod and Corvonn Gaines turned a five-point halftime deficit into a five-point lead with 12:23 to play. Sherrod then scored the next seven points for ECU to give the Pirates a 12-point advantage, 56-44, with 9:36 to play.
UCF countered with a 12-3 run of its own led by Jordan, who finished with a game-high 24 points. A pair of free throws by the sophomore brought UCF to within three, 59-56, with 3:59 to play. But Sherrod had an answer on the offensive end and pushed the lead back to five before Brock Young's layup made it a three-possession game with 2:43 remaining.
Jordan scored on a layup to cut the lead to 65-61 with 57 seconds left, but missed the opportunity to convert a three-point play. The Pirates held the Knights scoreless the rest of the game and made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 12 seconds.
ECU returns to action Saturday, Feb. 12 against Marshall. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
