IRVING, Texas - East Carolina senior Seth Maness was named Conference USA Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week league officials announced Monday morning. For Maness it is his fourth career honor and first of the 2011 season.
The Pinehurst, N.C. native tossed his third career complete game and first career complete game shutout against Pepperdine on March 4 limiting the Waves to just two hits. He tied his career-high with 11 strikeouts, which was previously set last March against Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. Maness faced three over the minimum and at one point retired 18 hitters in a row from the third (one-out) to the ninth inning (two-outs), shutting down the Waves completely for nearly seven innings. In all he forced eight ground outs, seven fly outs, walked one and hit one in his third career complete game.
Maness recorded seven first- or second-pitch outs, and ran the count to three balls just twice, including a ninth-inning walk. He struck out multiple hitters in three frames (including the side in the seventh) and threw 101 pitches (74 for strikes) in ECU's fastest game (hour and 45 minutes) since April 24, 2005 when Ricky Brooks no-hit Memphis in an hour and 43 minutes. The right-hander registered his 30th career win (third on ECU's all-time wins list) and first among active NCAA active pitchers.
Sharing the pitcher-of-the-week honor with Maness was Rice freshman Austin Kubitza, who tossed a complete-game, six-high shutout against No. 9 Texas A&M in just his third career start. UAB's Patrick Palmeiro took home hitter-of-the-week honors after helping the Blazers run their current winning streak to seven games, where he batted .389 (7-for-18) with a pair of doubles and a home run.
Maness and the Pirates (7-3) will be back in action on Tuesday, March 8 when they travel to Campbell before returning home for the first of four-straight home games on Wednesday, March 9 against High Point. Later in the week, ECU will host the Eighth Annual Keith LeClair Classic starting Friday, March 11.
