IRVING, Texas - Senior swimmer Andrew Stoker has been named the East Carolina recipient of the Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service award, according to an announcement by the league office Friday afternoon.
The award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with Friday's honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track and field, rifle and men's and women's swimming.
Stoker has split time between his efforts to maintain a flawless 4.0 grade point average and give back to the community. An accounting major with a minor in economics, Stoker has sacrificed countless hours working with Ovarian Cancer Walks, Avid Day/Gear Up Day, and holiday parties and canned food drives.
His efforts in the classroom are clearly displayed in his grades and being named to the Chancellor's List in each of his semesters as a Pirate. The Berwyn, Pa., native was also elected as Vice President of the international honor society Beta Gamma Sigma and is a member of Goldenkey, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Eta Sigma.
In the pool, Stoker was named the 2008 ECU Rookie of the Year, 2010 Most Improved Swimmer and has been the team-elected captain for the past two seasons.
