ECU Finishes Ninth At NCAA Regional

RADFORD, Va. --- The East Carolina men's golf team concluded the 2010-11 season with a ninth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Virginia Tech Regional being held at the par 72, 7,685 yard Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. The Pirates carded a three-round team total of 42-over 906 (302-304-300).
Despite posting their best round of the tournament Saturday, the Pirates were unable to move into the top five and finished 13 strokes behind fifth-place Kent State for the final NCAA Championship qualifying slot from the regional.
Duke shot a final round eight-under-par 280 and defeated conference rival Georgia Tech by four strokes to claim the team title. Oklahoma and LSU finished third and fourth, respectively, as the foursome all advanced to the national finals.
ECU juniors Harold Varner (74-72-76) and David Watkins (74-73-75) finished tied for 19th at six-over 222. Varner birdied five holes, but also shot double bogey on two holes to finish the day at four-over. Watkins turned in the Pirates' best round of the afternoon with three birdies and 11 pars to shot one-over 73 in the final round.
Fellow junior Jake Colley matched Watkins with the Pirates' lowest round of the day and completed the 54-hole event at 18-over (81-80-73=134). Red-shirt freshman Ryan Eibner carded a 16-over 232 (76-78-78) in his first NCAA Regional appearance, while junior Adam Stephenson fired a 20-over 236 (78-79-79).
Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer won medalist honors with a six-under-par 210 (70-71-69). Coastal Carolina's Sebastian Soderberg advanced to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. by being the top individual on a non-advancing team.
