NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Kimmy Cummings recorded her first career hat trick to help East Carolina (1-1) to a 4-1 win over Old Dominion (0-1-1) Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Stadium. For the Pirates it is their third-straight win over the Monarchs and ninth in the series that dates back to 1994.
Trailing 1-0 in the first half, Caty Bulter netted the equalizer in the 28th minute when Hali Oughton sent a free kick into the box and Butler sent a shot off the left post.
"This was a good win for us following Friday's match, said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We started off slow, but I thought we picked it up after Caty's goal, which came at a great time since we had a 60-minute lightning delay. Kimmy made great runs and had an amazing game scoring three goals. Our team did a great job finding her in her lanes and Kimmy finished with some good goals."
ODU took a 1-0 lead when Hallie Rogers sent a pass to Kate Kelly, who dribbled to the right and fired a shot that deflected up and over ECU goalie Christiane Cordero.
After an hour delay, ECU took the lead on Cummings' first goal of three goals in the match game as she received a through ball from Beth Batchelor beating ODU keeper Brianna Alvarado.
ECU capped off the scoring with two second half goals, just six minutes apart. Cummings netted both goals for her first career hat trick when she received passes from Brittany Batts and Amanda Malkiewicz. For Cummings it was her second career multi-goal game and the first ECU hat trick since Meghan McCallion netted three goals against DePaul on Oct. 1, 2004.
ODU held a slim 14-13 shot advantage and a 7-4 lead in corner kicks. Cummings, Butler and Batts each had three shots apiece for the Pirates, while Kelly led ODU with four.
Cordero made six saves in goal for the Pirates before being lifted in the 80th minute for Berit Hansen, who made her first appearance in goal since Oct. 30, 2009 against Marshall. Alvarado and Laura Bush each had two saves for ODU.
The Pirates will return to the pitch on Friday, Aug. 26 when they play host to instate rival UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. (ET) at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
