Women's Tennis Splits Doubleheader In Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After dropping a 6-1 decision against UNC Greensboro in the morning Saturday, East Carolina rebounded to blank North Carolina A&T 7-0 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. With the split, the Pirates move to 2-4 overall while the Spartans improve to 2-2 and the Aggies fall to 1-6.
In Saturday's opener, UNCG rolled to the doubles point by winning all three sets by a combined score of 24-8. Danielle Terpko and Yilian Zhang provided the closest matchup of the trio, falling to No. 40 Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins 8-4.
Natalie Collins won her singles bout at the No. 2 position over the Spartans' Dilara Yurtkuran in straight sets (6-3, 6-3), but she was the only Pirate to triumph as UNCG captured four of the five remaining singles matches - dropping just one set.
Zhang and Terpko set the tone from the outset against the Aggies as their 8-0 win over Cayla Cross and Azeib Nigatu in doubles was complemented by an 8-4 triumph by Collins and Dana Gray to clinch the doubles point.
The Pirates swept through the singles matches without dropping a set as Collins completed her solid day with a 6-0, 6-1 besting of Nigatu.
In other singles action, Zhang topped Cross at the No. 1 position 6-1, 7-5 while Renata Bakieva grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Kenya Colbert in the No. 3 bout. Terpko, Gray and Abby Richmond completed the shutout with respective straight-set wins against Kimberly Stalling, April Burrage and Victorea Austin in the final three matchups.
East Carolina continues its season Wednesday, Feb. 15, when the Pirates host Elon. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
