East Carolina Drops Home Opener To Elon, 6-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Elon used a doubles point and five decisive singles wins to post a 6-1 non-conference victory over East Carolina at the ECU Tennis Complex Wednesday afternoon and spoil the Lady Pirates' home opener.
With the victory, the Phoenix improved to 4-2 while ECU dropped to 2-5.
Elon took an early 1-0 advantage after winning two of three doubles bouts. Frida Jansaker and Jordan Johnston blanked Danielle Terpko and Yilian Zhang by an 8-0 count at No. 1 before Bryn Khoury and Viviana Stavreva knocked off Dana Gray and Neena Wanko 8-5 to clinch the opening point. East Carolina used an 8-3 victory by Renata Bakieva and Natalie Collins over Briana Berne and Maria Camara Ruiz to capture the No. 3 matchup and avoid the sweep.
Johnston started the Phoenix off with a solo win at No. 1, cruising past Zhang 6-3, 6-1, while Khoury defeated Wanko by a similar score of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.
At No. 6, Camara Ruiz secured Elon's team victory when she downed Gray 6-1, 6-3 before Stavreva added a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Bakieva at No. 4 and Jansaker fought past Terpko 7-5, 6-1 at the fifth position. Collins tallied ECU's only singles triump of the afternoon by handling Barbora Lazarova 6-4, 6-3 in a No. 3 matchup.
East Carolina will return to the road this weekend it faces Gardner-Webb and Western Carolina in a split doubleheader in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Lady Pirates will square off against the Bulldogs at 10 a.m. before meeting the Catamounts at 3 p.m.
