The East Carolina swimming and diving teams wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule over the weekend at the 2013 Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup with the women's team recording the program's best-ever finish at the event, second-place.
The Pirates, who were No. 38th in the latest Endless Pool rankings, completed the three-day meet with 1,504 points to finish runner-up to the host Tar Heels, which tallied 2,908.5 points. ECU finished 24 points ahead of 24th-ranked NC State (1480) in third-place and 48.5 points in front of No. 37 Duke (1456.5) in fourth-place followed by Navy (866), Old Dominion (647) and Georgia Southern (74).
All totaled, the Pirates had 26 swimmers and divers participate in the final events with an additional 27 student-athletes competing in the consolation finals, recording 35 all-time ECU top 10 performances.
Sophomore Megan Sellers met the NCAA `B' qualifying standard in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, setting the varsity record in 100 (1:01.71). Senior Anna Gibas and sophomore Bailie Monahan also recorded NCAA `B' qualifying times in the 100 backstroke and 200 butterfly, respectively. Gibas' time of 54.73 in the 100 back was an ECU record as was her time of 1:59.83 in the 200 backstroke. The trio teamed up with Anastasia Amoiroglou to set the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.42.
Megan Rossi established the school record in the 500 freestyle as well.
Jera Majeric also etched her name in the annals of ECU swimming with a freshman record time of 56.50 the 100 backstroke.
In the diving well, freshman Ashley Sams was the only Pirate to compete in the finals. She placed sixth in the one-meter diving competition and seventh in the three-meter event. Lily Armstrong just missed making the finals on the three-meter springboard with a ninth-place finish in the preliminaries.
As for the men's team, the Pirates captured fifth-place with a three-day tally of 1,167 points. The 27th-ranked Tar Heels finished in first with 2,751 points followed by No. 14 NC State (1154) in second with Navy (1365.5) and Duke (12414.5) rounding out the top four. Old Dominion finished a distant sixth with 792 points.
Seven Pirates competed in the finals, while 25 swimmers and divers participated in the consolation finals totaling 12 all-time top 10 performances.
Junior Rokas Cepulis posted NCAA `B' qualifying times in the 200 individual medley as well as the 100 and 200 Breaststroke.
The lone men's varsity record to fall over the weekend came in the 400 free relay with Michael Dugan, Nikola Simic, Shawn Hunter and Trevor Irish combining for a time of 3:00.31.
Will Beliveau finished 10th and 11 in the one and three-meter springboard competitions, respectively, with Alex Clark claiming 14th and 13th in the events.
