
East Carolina Opens Dual Meet Season With Win Over Davidson

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams tallied 184 and 188 points, respectively, to defeat Davidson as the Pirates opened the dual meet season Saturday afternoon at Minges Natatorium. Davidson recorded 104 points on the women's side, while the men notched 105 points.
"We had a great meet today," Head coach Rick Kobe said. "We won 31 of 32 events and had some great early season swims. We hope we can carry this momentum going into the rest of the season."
The Pirates turned in several solid performances as they won 31 of the 32 events in which they competed. East Carolina swept the diving events as sophomore Alicia Roueche won both the women's 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Roueche tallied a 251.18 in the 1-meter dive, while registering a 247.88 in the 3-meter dive. On the men's side, the Pirates were led by freshman Matt Mullen who won the 1-meter dive with a 254.10 and the 3-meter dive with a 285.90.
Lauren Chew, Megan Sellers and Julie Lajoie each won two events for the women. Chew claimed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:14.45. She paced AJ Jones (10:30.09) and Megan Rossi (10:35.23) who finished second and third, respectively. Chew came back and won the 500-yard freestyle after placing first with a time of 5:00.66.
Sellers earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke after completing the event in 1:04.86. Charlsie Lincoln (1:05.17) and Isabelle Little (1:06.01) followed Sellers as they placed second and third, respectively. Sellers also won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.21. She was the only Pirate to earn points in that event.
Lajoie placed first in the 200-yard butterfly as she finished in 2:02.09. Danielle Morrin (2:04.17) and Lauren Gray (2:07.35) followed Lajoie to finish second and third, respectively. Lajoie also paced East Carolina in the 200-yard backstroke as she won the event after posting a time of 2:02.91. Jera Majeric placed second with a time of 2:07.40, while Taylor Hague came in third with a time of 2:09.55.
On the men's side, Boleck De Pawlikowski had a pair of first-place finishes. He won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:44.99 which was nearly five seconds faster than the second-place finisher. He also placed first in the 200-yard backstroke after recording a time of 1:52.72.
Rokas Cepulis earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke as he posted a time of 57.21. He was followed by Austin Taylor's second-place finish in 59.76. Cepulis came back and won the 200-yard breaststroke after tallying a time of 2:05.96.
Adam Dear won the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly. He finished the 100-yard event in 51.38 and posted a time of 1:54.42 in the 200-yard.
Nikola Simic also won multiple events for East Carolina. Simic won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.42 as well as the 100-yard freestyle after recording a time of 46.24.
The Pirates turned in strong showings in the relay events as they won the men's and women's 200-yard medley relays. The men's squad of Fran Krznaric, Taylor, Jeffrey Mead and Shawn Hunter registered a time of 1:34.88 for a first place finish. The women's team which was made up of Hague, Sellers, Bailie Monahan and Tori Angerneier won their event with a time of 1:45.72.
East Carolina will return to Minges Natatorium Saturday, October 18, at 1 p.m., when the Pirates host College of Charleston's men's and women's squads for a dual meet.
