Castro, LaDuca Compete At UGA Bulldog Classic

ATHENS, Ga. - Junior Nicole LaDuca and sophomore Michelle Castro competed at the University of Georgia's Bulldog Classic last weekend, their second respective appearances during the 2014 fall season.
Castro and LaDuca opened play in the main draw of singles Friday morning, where Castro took down Lipscomb's Deahna Welcher, 6-2, 6-5, to advance to the second round. Next was a matchup with Georgia Tech's Rasheeda McAdoo where she dropped a tough first set, 7-6 (5), before being downed in the final set, 6-2. LaDuca could not advance out of the first round as she fell, 6-4, 7-5, to Wisconsin's Maria Avgerinos.
Castro and LaDuca teamed up on the doubles courts and took down a duo from Lipscomb, 8-4. After the tandem advanced to the second round on Saturday, they found themselves in a seesaw battle with a Georgia's Laura Patterson and Ellen Perez. Trailing 3-0 early on, LaDuca and Castro turned the match on its head by winning six of the next seven games to take a 6-4 lead, but could not hold on as they were defeated, 8-6.
In Saturday's consolation singles bracket, Castro collected a dominant 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lipscomb's Jenny Borck. LaDuca fell short in a tough three-set bout with Wisconsin's Sydney Ryder, 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-0.
On Sunday, LaDuca cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 consolation singles win over Lipscomb's Kathryn Evans, while Castro suffered a 6-3, 7-6(2) defeat to Georgia's Mia King.
East Carolina will return to action next weekend at the ITA Carolinas Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C.
