ECU Women's Tennis Wraps Up Successful ECU Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team finished its lone home tournament of the fall season with the completion of the ECU Invitational, which took place at River Birch Tennis Park and J.H. Rose High School.
Neena Wanko, Dana Gray, Katie Hoch and Betsy Zurawel each recorded 3-0 singles marks during the tournament to win their respective flights.
The Pirates got the weekend going Friday morning with six-straight singles victories, as Wanko, Gray, Maria Storozheva, Maria Gomez, Hoch and Sara Sarjoo each collected straight-set wins against players from Norfolk State. As the afternoon began, Zurawel was able to take down Campbell's Camila Valencia, 6-4, 7-5.
East Carolina began its next series of singles matches against UNC Wilmington, where four Pirates collected victories to the Seahawks' two. Wanko, Sarjoo and Hoch dismantled Miller Hales, Hamilton Lovett and Christin Kaupper, respectively, in straight sets, before Gray outlasted Alix Theodossiou, 6-7(2), 7-5, 1-0 (10-6). Zurawel and Karling Watson faced opponents from Appalachian State, as Zurawel cruised past Olivia King, 6-1, 6-1, and Watson edged out Marisa Anthony, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6).
ECU finished the day with four doubles matches against the Mountaineers, but only the tandem of Hoch and Watson was able to collect a win, as they defeated Anthony and King, 8-2.
Competition resumed Saturday morning, as Hoch, Wanko and Gomez collected straight-set victories over Appalachian State's Sarah King, Megan Mullen and Clare Cox, respectively. Gray took down the Mountaineers' Brianna Armellino in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 10-0 (10-7), while Zurawel outworked Campbell's Kristen Renz, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).
In doubles play versus the Camels, the Pirates claimed three of the four matches, before claiming two out of three contests versus N.C. Central to close out the day. The tandems comprising Gomez and Wanko, as well as Sarjoo and Zurawel, won both of their doubles contests to close out the tournament.
Hoch and Watson, who did not play the fourth doubles match against the Eagles, but finished the weekend 2-0 as a doubles team.
East Carolina will close out its fall season at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., Nov. 7-9.
