
Women's Basketball Picked Third In American Preseason Poll

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The East Carolina women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the American Athletic Conference after a vote by the league's head coaches, the conference announced Thursday.
Topping the poll was UConn with 100 points and 10 first-place votes, while USF was picked to finish second with 91 points. Entering its first season in The American and returning all five starters from the 2013-14 squad, the Pirates accumulated 72 points, while Temple and Tulane both received 67 in a tie for fourth place.
Redshirt junior Jada Payne received second-team all-conference honors after averaging 18.4 points and 7.5 rebounds during her first campaign at ECU last season. The Hickory, N.C., native broke the single-season program records in both free throw percentage (.843) and three-point field goals made (70), while her 569 points were the sixth most ever scored in a year.
East Carolina opens the 2014-15 campaign at the URI Invitational in Kingston, R.I., Nov. 14-15 against Fairfield and Rhode Island. The Pirates will begin their home slate Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., when College of Charleston comes to Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
