Pirate Women's Tennis Completes Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team wrapped up its second fall tournament of the season at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates opened play Friday with singles and doubles competition, as freshmen Maria Gomez and Sara Sarjoo collected straight-set singles wins. Gomez downed Stetson's Isabella Fernandez, 6-3, 6-4, while Sarjoo cruised past NC State's Ashley Cappanolo, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, ECU's three tandems each posted 1-1 records, as Maria Storozheva and Dana Gray, Gomez and Betsy Zurawel, and Katie Hoch and Sarjoo played as partners.
On Saturday, Gray picked up her lone singles victory of weekend, dismantling Navy's Rozel Hernandez, 6-0, 6-2. Zurawel cruised in her first win, taking down West Virginia State's Nina Diwald, 6-2, 6-2, before claiming the 13th-place backdraw on Sunday against Navy's Kristine Rojo, 7-5, 7-5. Storozheva also won her singles match on the final day, downing North Carolina A&T's Kenya Colbert, 6-2, 7-5.
East Carolina will return to action next weekend, Oct. 10-12, when it heads to Athens, Ga., to compete in the University of Georgia's Bulldog Tennis Classic.
