Swimming And Diving Teams Each In Fifth At Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Both the East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams are in fifth place following the conclusion of day one of the 2014 Nike Cup , hosted by North Carolina at Koury Natatoirum.
Tennessee owns first-place on the men's side with 572.5 points followed by North Carolina (498), NC State (433), Duke (344.5) and ECU (256). The Volunteers (483) also lead the women's event with NC State (461) in second with North Carolina (427), Air Force (285) and ECU (256) rounding out the top five.
A quartet of Pirates competed in the finals of their respective events. Junior Bailie Monahan finished sixth in the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:02.77. Senior Rokas Cepulis claimed fourth place in the men's 200 IM with an NCAA `B' qualifying time of 1:47.86, while Cepulis' classmate Nikola Simic captured fourth in the 50 free. Freshman Matt Mullen earned an eighth place finish on the 1-meter springboard with a score 0f 278.55.
Senior Lauren Chew established an new varsity record in the 500 free with a time of 4:50.79, earning an 11th place finish in the event.
ECU will be back in action Friday morning for the second day of the 2014 Nike Cup. The preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m. and the finals will take place tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m.
