ESTERO, Fla. -- Greg Mays scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Green Bay to a 66-49 victory over East Carolina on Monday in the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Keifer Sykes added 12 points and five assists for Green Bay (2-1), who shot 55.3 percent from the floor compared to 31.9 for East Carolina, which was out-rebounded 37-23 and gave up 22 second-chance points.
East Carolina (2-2) was led by Terry Whisnant with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. Prince Williams added nine points off the bench.
"[Terry] was aggressive," ECU Head Coach Jeff Lebo said. "I liked him being aggressive especially after he started out missing his first three or four shots. Offensively he was the lone bright spot for us. We'll need him to be consistent offensively and continue to be aggressive shooting it, but we'll need something to go along with him. We didn't have anything to go with him today."
Green Bay's Carrington Love made the game's only field goal through the first 7 minutes. Later, Mays scored seven of Green Bay's next 12 points to extend its lead to 17-3. Prince Williams ended East Carolina's 0 for 13 start with a 3-pointer at the 12:12 mark just ahead of the media timeout.
The Phoenix scored 10 unanswered points out of the timeout to seize control of the game. Green Bay stretched its lead to 17 with less than two minutes remaining until halftime, but consecutive baskets by Whisnant and freshman B.J. Tyson pulled the Pirates within 13, 36-23, at the break.
The second half began with Green Bay's Greg Mays dunking along the baseline to spark a 10-2 run capped by a 3-pointer from Love to give the Phoenix a 21-point lead, its largest of the game.
Refusing to fold the tent, the Pirates responded with a 16-7 run to pull within 12 with eight minutes remaining. Whisnant scored 10 straight points for ECU with a pair of 3-pointers and two baskets in the paint.
The remained behind by 12 points with 6:28 remaining and Green Bay closed out the game on an 11-6 run.
East Carolina will face either Evansville or Fresno State in consolation round Tuesday at 12 p.m.
