GREENVILLE, N.C. - Joe Ingle and Jimmy Boyd combined on a two-hit, six-inning shutout leading Gold to a 2-0 World Series clinching win Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Ingle (1-0) scattered two hits over 3.1 innings with a pair of walks picking up the decisive game three win for Gold. The freshman right-hander pitched around jams in the second and third frames where Purple stranded runners in scoring position on two occasions. Boyd, who made his second appearance on the mound, tossed 2.2 perfect innings with three strikeouts earning the save.
Gold plated the game's first run when Boyd reached on a fielder's choice where Parker Lamm scored easily from third for a 1-0 advantage. Lamm singled to center to start frame, took second on Hunter Allen's ground out back to Evan Kruczynski on the mound and landed on third with his second stolen base of the weekend. Boyd sent a shot to first, where Bryce Harman tried to turn a double play getting Luke Lowery out at second, but a low throw from Kirk Morgan back to first negated the twin killing.
Kruczynski (0-1) suffered the loss despite working five full innings where he allowed a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk. The left-hander retired the final seven batters he faced before turning the game over to the bullpen. Chris Perry (0.2 IP) and Luke Bolka (0.1) worked a perfect sixth inning keeping Purple within striking distance for its final at-bat.
Lowery's run in the third inning gave Gold a 2-0 advantage when he came around to score on Boyd's single and Garrett Brooks' miscue in right field. With two outs, Lowery singled through the left side and crossed home on Boyd's fourth hit of the series a shot to right that fell in front of a diving Brooks, allowing Boyd to reach second.
For Gold, Lowery batted a series-best .500 (5-for-10) with three doubles and three RBI. Boyd scored a series-high four runs while batting .444 (4-for-9) with a pair of RBI, and Tyler Strawn crossed home three times and batted .400 (4-for-10).
Harman led Purple offensively batting .429 (3-for-7) with two home runs, five RBI and scored three runs. Jackson Mims drove in four runs and scored once while batting .375 (3-for-8).
The Pirates will conclude the 2014 Fall Season with two weeks of individual workouts and will return to the practice field as a team in late January to prepare for the 2015 season, which begins on Friday, Feb. 13 against Virginia.
