Former Pirate middle infielder Hunter Allen, who was named 2015 American Athletic Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player, enters his first season with the Pirates' coaching staff as a student assistant coach. Allen, a two-year letterwinner at East Carolina, will assist second-year head coach Cliff Godwin in a variety of roles on and off the field.
During his career, Allen started 93 of 104 games for the Pirates boasting a .334 average with 109 hits, 28 RBI, 56 runs and produced 28 multi-hit games. Allen helped ECU to 73 wins in two seasons including a 40-win campaign in 2015 -- the Pirates first since 2011. He was also instrumental in guiding ECU to the 2015 AAC Tournament title and a No. 2 seed in the Coral Gables Regional.
A co-captain and Brooks Wallace Shortstop-of-the-Year Watch List Candidate in 2015, Allen closed out his senior season starting 56 of 58 games at shortstop and leading the team in batting average (.349), hits (73) and on-base percentage (.408), while standing among the team leaders (top-4) in eight other statistical categories. He batted an impressive .500 (9-for-16) with two extra base hits and scored six runs in four AAC Tournament games earning Most Outstanding Player honors. Allen ranked among the conference leaders in batting average (third), assists (173/fifth), fielding double plays (37/t8th), hits (t8th) and on-base percentage (.408/t11th). Nationally he was one of the toughest hitters to strikeout, fanning just once in every 13.9 at-bats, and ranking 36th in the country.
As a junior, he started 37 of 46 games at shortstop batting .308 with 11 RBI and 18 runs scored. Allen led the club with 14 sac bunts (second in Conference USA), collected a pair of game-winning RBI (UNC and Southern Miss), recorded nine multi-hit games and ranked among the team leaders in average (third) and on-base percentage (4th/.362).
Prior to his arrival in Greenville, Allen was a two-year letterwinner at Brunswick Community College where he batted .359 (116-for-323) with 10 doubles, 51 RBI and 69 runs scored in 88 career games. As a sophomore he earned second-team All-America and first-team all-conference honors after batting .371 (62-for-167) with seven doubles and 35 RBI, while also taking home first-team all-defensive accolades. As a freshman, he helped the Dolphins to their fourth-straight 30-win season and a spot in the Region X DII Championships Game against Catawba Valley Community College following a season where he batted .346 (54-for-156) with three doubles, 16 RBI and 33 runs scored.
The Shallotte, N.C. native is expected to graduate in May of 2016 with a bachelor's degree in recreation and park management.
