East Carolina Head Coach Jeff Lebo
Opening statement
"I really thought today that we competed awfully hard and executed our game plan. We made some shots, and I thought we'd have to make 10 three's in this game to have a shot to win on the road. It was just a terrific win for our kids and we overcame a lot down the stretch. We knew UAB would make a run at some point and I'm really proud of the way we responded at crucial times offensively, in particularly with strong finishes to the basket. We finally got some rebounds, but our kids battled awfully hard. We did something a lot of people don't do. One is win on the road and two is win here."
On executing the game plan
"I thought we were trying to work with the team to be more patient offensively and I thought we did that for the most part. We shot the ball with some confidence and we've got to be more efficient."
UAB Head Coach Jerrod Haase
Opening statement
"I am hugely disappointed. I thought we had an opportunity to get over .500 in the league. We had the opportunity to play in front of a good crowd today, a lot of people showed up. I thought our energy and effort had an ebb and flow to it. On the offensive end, our ability to make plays was not there. Their zone caused us a lot of problems because we were not able to shoot from the outside. Up until halfway through the second half, we weren't able to make any shots on the inside either. As a coach, you go back to the drawing board to find answers and solutions to give the guys a better game plan to be able to score against the zone."
On barrage of East Carolina 3-pointers early in second half
"We couldn't have been surprised as much as we emphasized the ability to guard the 3-point shot. We told them that they were very capable shooters. I don't think they were surprised, but apparently we were a little deflated. We didn't have enough resiliency to see the ball go through the net for them and come back to have the energy the next play. Really good teams don't have ebb and flow to their energy and effort, and we had that tonight."
On relying on the 3-point shot
"There were certain possessions where we shot it too soon, but we were struggling mightily to score on the interior. They were being very active with their hands and it wasn't until later in the game that we were able to make some of those plays. We do want to make the zone work, have the ball change sides of the floor, and try to get the ball inside. We've emphasized it all year. It was one of our keys before the game today. At some point, we have to make a shot."
