
Williams Named To Gregg Olson Award Watch List

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior Ryan Williams has been named to the 2014 Gregg Olsson Award Watch List, which is given to college baseball's "Breakout Player-of-the-Year". Williams is one of 80 players and one of three Conference USA pitchers named on the initial list.
Williams, who became the first Division I pitcher to win games this season, owns a 10-2 record with seven saves in 28 appearances, picking up a win or save in 17 of the Pirates 29 victories.
The Morgan Hill, Calif., native has struck out 64 batters while walking just nine and ranks ninth nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.11). Williams has allowed 24 runs (17 earned) in 83.2 innings and has registered a 1.83 ERA.
Williams has been named to the NCBWA Stopper-of-the-Year Award Midseason Watch List and the College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher-of-the-Year Watch List for his efforts this season.
The award is named after former Auburn Tiger star pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All American, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All Star. Like Olson, these players have elevated their game to an elite level and in many instances their team has mirrored their success as a direct result.
Initial nominations were made by sports information/media contacts from schools across the country. An independent panel will determine the finalists and winner.
Semifinalists are slated to be named, Friday, May 20th at the start of NCAA Regional play and the finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6th at the beginning of Super Regional action. The winner of the 2014 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park from June 15-June 25/26. 2013
