ECU, Houston Postgame Quotes
January 14, 2015 | Men's Basketball
ECU Head Coach Jeff Lebo
Opening statement
"That was a big win for our kids. There was a lot of relief I think on the faces of a lot of guys out there. Two teams that have been struggling and in the last five minutes of the game it came down to who was going to make the plays, who had the confidence to make the plays, the plays to try to win the game and luckily we came out on top."
"We made some key plays and some key shots coming down the stretch. Marshall [Guilmette] made a big 3, Caleb made a big driving lay up and B.J's dunk on the pass from Guilmette were all big plays for us. Defensively, Terry Whisnant did a great job on Stiggers all night. No 3s in the game and he's averaging 10 attempts and four makes per game. Today he was 0 of 5 and 2 of 15. That is a reason why we had a chance to win this game."
On B.J. Tyson's performance and overall contributions from the point
"[B.J.] was terrific. He shot 50 percent from the field and played with a lot of confidence. He had seven rebounds to lead us. He was great but I thought our point guard play was good too. Antonio [Robinson] and Lance [Tejada] combined for 15 points at that spot and that's the kind of numbers we need from them."
Junior guard Terry Whisnant
On the Pirates getting their first American conference victory
"We are definitely happy to get this win, but also we don't want to get too hyped up. We have to come in tomorrow and get ready for SMU."
On holding Jherrod Stiggers to five points
" Coach (Lebo) challenged me early in the week, by telling me about this guy and what he likes to do. [Coach] told me he usually shoots 10 3s a game and I took it as a challenge. Coach was on me all week and I studied film to see what he did. I was ready to lock up tonight and I really didn't care about scoring. I just did what I needed to do in order for us to get this win tonight."
Freshman B.J. Tyson
On his rebounding performance
"The coaches always say we win more games when we out-rebound the other team. Another thing our coaches harp on is being tough and getting defensive and offensive rebounds. We need to crash the boards and I think we did all of that tonight."
On his offensive game plan
"My mentality was to attack in transition because that is what I am best at. [Coach] always tells me to take the mid-range jumper because that's my best shot, but when they close down on defense I need to get to the rack and that is what I did tonight."?
