
Pirates Sweep Dual Meet From UMBC

BALTIMORE --- The East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams each improved to 5-1 this season as the Pirates swept a dual meet from UMBC Saturday. The men posted a 154-145 victory with a win in the final event of the meet. The ladies cruised to a 188-112 triumph.
The men's competition was decided in the final relay with the ECU foursome of Nikola Simic, Shawn Hunter, Michael Dugan and Trevor Irish touching 0:00.55 ahead of UMBC's squad in the 400 free relay.
Senior Rokas Cepulis set a pair of UMBC Aquatic Center records with first-places finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. He earned a third individual win in the 200 IM after helping the 200 medley relay team to a first-place finish in the opening event.
Sophomore Tori Angermeier led the women's dominant performance with three individual first-place finishes, winning the 50 and 100 free and the 200 IM. She also swam the leadoff leg on the victorious 200 medley relay team.
Lauren Chew (10:23.45) and Alexandra Jones (10:29.41) finished one and two in the women's 1000 free, while freshman Boleck De Pawlikowski (9:41.71) won the men's event before also touching first in the 200 back (1:52.16)
Ashley Sams earned the gold medal in the women's 3-meter diving competition with a score of 295.35 with Alicia Roueche placing third. Sams also claimed the silver medal on the 1-meter board.
In the men's side, Matt Mullen took second in the 1-meter diving competition before Will Beliveau earned the same results on the 3-meter board. Taylor Berkey finished third in both events.
Julie Lajoie swept the women's backstroke events, winning the 200 (2:04.13) by six seconds and the 100 (58.70) by 0.74 seconds.
Other victors included Andre Smedstad (51.94), Megan Sellers (100 breast), Danielle Morrin (200 fly), Bailie Monahan (100 fly) and Adam Dear (100 fly).
ECU will return to competition Saturday, Jan. 31, against William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
