Dec. 16, 2015
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Following a 13-day hiatus, the East Carolina women's basketball team will return to the court for its second string of three games in as many days when it takes on Chattanooga and Ohio in Wilmington, N.C., for the UNCW Christmas Classic. Both games will tip at 12 noon on Dec. 18 and 19, respectively, at Trask Coliseum.
Following Saturday's game, ECU will continue on down the coast to take on the nation's No. 2 team, South Carolina, in the Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. That contest is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
East Carolina (6-3) suffered its first road loss of the season, 83-69, at Auburn on Dec. 5. Jada Payne scored a team-high 23 points and I'Tiana Taylor recorded her third-straight double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, as DeVaughn Gray scored a season-high 14 points and Khadidja Toure snared a career-high seven steals. The Tigers forced 33 turnovers to the Pirates' 28 while shooting better than 52 percent from the field to earn the victory.
ALL-TIME VERSUS CHATTANOOGA & OHIO
The Pirates and Mocs will meet for the first time when they tip off Friday afternoon, while the Bobcats are a relatively familiar foe to ECU in recent years. East Carolina and Ohio will face off for the third-straight year and sixth time overall, as the purple and gold claimed a 76-68 victory in Athens last December after a 76-47 home triumph the year prior.
SCOUTING THE MOCS
Chattanooga (6-4) has played a challenging non-conference slate thus far that includes road games at Indiana and Tennessee, as well has contests against top-ranked UConn and then-No. 21 USF. The Mocs are 0-3 in games away from their friendly confines this season and have lost two of their last three. Despite reaching the NCAA Tournament last season, Chattanooga is scoring just 52.3 points per game, shooting 39.5 percent from the field and below 30 percent from beyond the arc on the year. The Southern Conference favorites are led by Jasmine Joyner's 12.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while Keiana Gilbert (11.2 ppg) and Chelsey Shumpert (10.7 ppg) are also averaging double-figure points.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Ohio (5-3), which will play UNC Wilmington before its matchup against ECU on Saturday, is coming off a 64-47 road loss at Duquesne on Sunday. After winning the Mid-American Conference and earning an NCAA Tournament bid last season, the Bobcats are already 3-0 in neutral-site games this season. Star player Kiyanna Black leads the team with 17.1 points per game and is shooting better than 40 percent from the field. Quiera Lampkins ranks second on the team in scoring with 12.3 points, as Ohio averages 29 three-point field goal attempts per game through its first eight ballgames.
TOUGH TRAVELS CONTINUE
The Pirates are in the midst of a 42-day spread between home games, with the last one coming against Presbyterian on Nov. 20. ECU will play no home games in the month of December and return to Minges Coliseum for its second conference game of the year against nationally-ranked USF on Jan. 2.
ANOTHER MACY MILESTONE
Sixth-year Head Coach Heather Macy won her 200th-career game at SMU last season and recently won No. 100 at ECU last Friday, Nov. 27 in the 80-62 victory over Eastern Washington at the Lone Star Showcase in Austin, Texas. Macy is just five wins behind Cathy Andruzzi, 10 behind Catherine Bolton and 26 away from Sharon Baldwin-Tener for the top three spots in program history.
AMERICAN CONFERENCE HONOR ROLL
Jada Payne has been named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll each of the first three weeks this season (Nov. 16, Nov. 23 and Nov. 30). In each week, the Hickory, N.C., native averaged at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Payne was named player-of-the-week once and earned five honor roll nods overall last season.
PAYNE BRINGS THE RAIN
Jada Payne broke her own ECU single-season record for three-pointers made with 80 in 33 games in 2014-15. She initially set the record in 2013-14 with 70 makes from beyond the arc and is on pace to break the school record for conversions in just three years:
