
Pirate Women's Tennis Tops Coastal Carolina, N.C. Central

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team swept a home doubleheader Saturday, defeating Coastal Carolina, 4-1, before taking down North Carolina Central, 5-1, to push its winning streak to four-straight matches.
The Pirates opened the day with dominant doubles play against the Chanticleers, as the tandem of Dana Gray and Katie Hoch were first off the court, cruising to a 6-0 sweep over Sara Bondar and Romane Delay on court three. Maria Gomez and Neena Wanko were not far behind, topping Marie Babayan and Natalie Wall, 6-3, on court two to notch the doubles point and give ECU a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
East Carolina picked up a pair of convincing, straight-set singles victories at the No. 2 and 5 spots in the lineup, as Michelle Castro defeated Libby Scott, 6-4, 6-3, on court two and Hoch dispatched Bondar, 6-2, 6-2 on court five. Honami Yazawa got Coastal Carolina (1-4) on the board with a tough three-set win over Nicole LaDuca on court one, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, but Gomez clinched the overall victory at No. 3 singles with a three-set triumph of her own, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, over Delay.
ECU was only halfway done with their twinbill sweep, but began the second matchup of the day against N.C. Central in a similar manner to the first with a pair of convincing doubles victories. Gomez and Wanko worked their way to another 6-3 victory over Mia Ramic and Aissa Muamba at the No. 2 spot in the lineup, while Gray and Hoch hustled to a 6-2 win against Lynsey Cover and Jamie Rogers at No. 3 doubles to give East Carolina the doubles point and a quick 1-0 advantage.
The Pirates maintained control of the match with quick starts in singles play, as Castro rolled past Rebecca Wood, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot, but Ekaterina Nekrasova got the Eagles on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gomez on court three to cut their deficit in half, 2-1.
After Nicole LaDuca fought her way through tough three-set victory on court one, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, over Muamba at No. 1 singles, as Katie Hoch took down Mia Ramic, 6-2, 6-2, on court four and Wanko breezed past Cover, 6-1, 6-2, on court five to seal the 5-1 win.
East Carolina will remain at home and host Campbell on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m.
