
ECU Swimming Starts Strong at American Athletic Conference Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- East Carolina won three of the four relay events on day one of the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Wednesday.
The Pirates stand in second-place on the men's side with 116 points, trailing first-place SMU (134) by 18. The women are in third-place with 96 points, trailing first-place Houston (120) by 24 points and second-place UConn (108) by 12.
The men captured the gold in both the 800 free relay and the 200 medley relay. Michael Dugan, Fran Krznaric, Eyan Eagle and Julien Dodu teamed up to win the 800 medley with a time of 6:30.55, more than two seconds ahead of second-place SMU (6:30.11).
Andre Smedstad, Nikola Simic, Adam Dear and Rokas Cepulis completed the Pirates' sweep of the men's relay events with a time of 1:27.19, narrowly touching in front of silver medalist SMU (1:27.65).
On the women's side, the ECU foursome of Tori Angermeier, Bailie Monahan, Anna Maria Svanbergsson and Lauren Chew captured the women's 200 free relay gold medal with a time of 7:14.69, nearly four seconds better than silver medalist SMU (7:18.27).
Angermeier and Svanbergsson joined Megan Sellers and Anastasia Amoiroglou on the 200 medley relay squad and claimed the silver medal with a time of 1:41.13. SMU claimed the gold with an NCAA qualifying time of 1:37.32.
ECU sophomore Alicia Roueche recorded an eighth-place finish in the women's 1-meter diving competing, while Matt Mullen earned fourth-place in the men's 3-meter diving event.
Each of the three ECU victories resulted in a new school relay record. Angermeier (1:47.84) and Dugan (1:37.42) also established new individual marks in the men's and women's 200 free with their lead off splits in the 800 free relay.
Competition resumes Thursday morning with the preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by the finals of the day's events at 6 p.m.
