
Pirates Move Into First Place At American Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's swimming and diving team moved into first-place Friday at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championships being held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Pirates hold a 33 point lead over second-place SMU, 609-576, heading into the final day of competition Saturday.
The ECU women's team remains in third-place with 391.5 points. SMU leads the women's championships with 550 points followed by UConn in second-place with 428 points.
Senior Rokas Cepulis picked his second individual gold medal of the meet, winning the 100 breast with a NCAA B qualifying and ECU record time of 53.00. Cepulis missed the setting the championship record by 0.26, but finished 1.15 seconds ahead of the silver medalist.
Cepulis joined Fran Krznaric, Daniel Woods and Nikola Simic to capture the silver in the 400 medley relay with a varsity record time of 3:11.73.
Krznaric also claimed a spot on the podium with a second-place finish with an ECU varsity record time (47.54) in the 100 back and a third-place finish in the 400 IM (3:50.93).
Michael Dugan finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.30, establishing another varsity record, while Woods earned a bronze medal in the 100 fly (48.38).
Bailie Monahan, Julie Lajoie and Megan Sellers each earned a spot on the medal stands in the ladies events. Monahan took home the silver in the 100 fly (54.09), while Lajoie claimed the bronze medal in the 400 IM (4:20.96) as did Sellers in the 100 breast with an ECU record time (1:00.41).
The trio teamed up with Tori Angermeier to record a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay, setting a varsity record time (3:41.46).
Competition concludes Saturday, with preliminaries at 10 a.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m. ET.
