
Seventeen ECU Swimmers Earn All-Conference Accolades

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Seventeen East Carolina swimmers earned all-conference accolades in 24 events at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championships over the weekend. Nikola Simic and Fran Krznaric led the men's team by achieving all-league status in six events apiece, while Bailie Monahan recorded five all-conference performances on the women's side.
The Pirates set a total of 15 varsity records during the meet en route to winning the 2015 American Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship in their first season as a member of the conference.
Coupled with its conference championship victory included a shift in the national rankings as ECU moved up to No. 17 in the latest collegeswimming.com Team Rankings.
Rokas Cepulis earned all-conference honors in five events with individual first-place finishes in the men's 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM, setting ECU varsity records in each event. He was also part of the men's gold medal winning 200-medley relay team.
ECU captured first-place in four of the eight relay events during the meet.
Simic was also a gold medal winner, touching first in the men's 50 free with an ECU varsity record time.
Michael Dugan received all-conference accolades in four events, while Trevor Irish and Dan Woods earned all-league medals in three events each with Shawn Hunter collecting medals in two events.
Cepulis, Dugan, Krznaric and Simic all recorded NCAA qualifying times in multiple events with Irish, Woods and diver Matt Mullen posting NCAA marks in one event each.
Monahan was one of two gold medalists for the ECU women's swimming and diving team. In addition to her victory in the 200 fly, Lauren Chew touched first in the 1650 free, setting a new ECU record.
The ladies posted six school records over the weekend.
Chew and Tori Angermeier each collected all-conference honors in three events, while Megan Sellers and Julie Lajoie were all-league accolades in a pair of races.
Monahan and Sellers posted NCAA qualifying times in two events each with Angermeier and Vendella Norrman registering marks in one apiece.
The 2015 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship will be held March 26-28 in Iowa City, Iowa, while the women's championships will be held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, Match 19-21.
