STORRS, Conn. - Connecticut bounced back from an early doubles loss and staved off a pair of Pirate singles rallies to post a 4-1 American Athletic Conference victory over East Carolina Friday afternoon at the UConn Tennis Courts.
After Dana Gray and Katie Hoch opened pairs play with a 6-3 win over Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva and Summer Walker at the No. 3 slot, Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca nailed down the first point and gained an early ECU advantage by outlasting Srna Stosljevic and Maxene Weinberg 7-6 in a top-seeded matchup.
The Huskies quickly answered with straight-set singles triumphs at the first three positions and at the No. 6 spot to secure the victory before East Carolina could finish off promising leads. Hoch was serving for match point against Zaina Zaki at 6-2, 5-3 in a No. 5 battle, while Sarah Sarjoo rallied back from a 6-0 first set loss to take a 6-2, 1-0 edge in a No. 4 meeting.
Connecticut (13-8, 2-2 AAC) used wins by Stosljevic (6-3, 6-1 over LaDuca at No. 1), Pletnyeva (6-2, 6-2 over Maria Gomez at No. 3), Shea Flanagan (6-4, 6-3 over Neena Wanko at No. 6) and Emma Alderson (6-3, 7-5 over Castro at No. 2) to guarantee the victory.
