GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Second-year head coach Cliff Godwin formally announced Thursday East Carolina's 17-man incoming class, which features nine position players, six pitchers and a pair of two-way players.
The 2015-16 recruiting class consists of five infielders (Turner Brown, Kendall Ford, Brady Lloyd, Wes Phillips and Drew Piscorik), three outfielders (Justin Dirden, Ryan Littlefield and Dwanya Williams-Sutton), one catcher (Jake Washer), six pitchers (Matt Bridges, Cam Colmore, West Covington, Chris Holba, Sam Lanier and Shelton Perkins, Jr.) and two two-way players (Denny Brady and Zack Mozingo).
"We are extremely excited about our first recruiting class," said Godwin, the 2015 American Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year. "In my opinion, our staff put together one of the best incoming classes in the country. We added front line arms, a very athletic group of infielders and outfielders, and some power bats. We are looking forward to an exciting 2016 season with the incoming talent as well as our returning group, who won an American Athletic Conference Championship!"
Godwin guided the Pirates to a 40-win season, an AAC Tournament title and a berth in the Coral Gables Regional -- its first since NCAA Regional since 2012.
The new players and the veteran members of the ECU squad began fall classes Monday, Aug. 24 and will engage in a four-week period of conditioning drills and individual workouts.
ECU begins its six-week, full-squad fall practice session on Friday, Sept. 25 with an intra-squad scrimmage at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium, which is open to the public.
Godwin also announced the dates and times of the Pirates annual Purple & Gold World Series (Oct. 30 at 5 p.m.; Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.; Nov. 1 at 2 p.m.), which will be held at Clark-LeClair Stadium and is free of charge to the fans.
The Pirates return 17 letterwinners including Coral Gables All-Regional selection Garrett Brooks, 2015 Freshman All-America and All-AAC Tournament member Joe Ingle, three-time Johnny Bench Award Watch List Travis Watkins and 2014 all-conference performers Bryce Harman and Charlie Yorgen.
