COLUMBIA, S.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team suffered its first sweep of the season Friday night against South Carolina by set scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-8. With the loss, the Pirates drop to 6-3 on the year, while the Gamecocks move to 5-5.
The Pirates came out hitting .257 with 14 kills in the first set as they kept the game against South Carolina close before dropping the frame by three points, 25-22. Although the Pirates remained in striking distance throughout the first set, the Gamecocks' defense held the Pirates' offense to just 20 points combined in the following two frames as ECU was kept off balance as they fell by scores of 25-14 and 25-8.
"We played well in the first set," Head coach Julie Torbett explained. "I thought we were right with them, point-for-point. But our passing broke down and we were forced to be out of system. We were outmanned at the net. It was a great environment. The band and students really supported their home team. I hope it was a valuable lesson as we move close to conference play."
Senior middle hitter Kierra Lee-Dunson led the Pirates with five kills on 16 attempts while committing just one error as she hit .250. She also added a team-high two block assists.
Junior setter Sabrina Gonzalez finished the game with 15 assists, a team-leading seven digs and four kills while hitting a team-best .300 in the contest.
The Pirates' offense was limited to just .085 hitting in the match, while the Gamecocks posted a .371 attack percentage.
East Carolina looks to get back on the winning track at the South Carolina Invitational when it takes on Wofford and Charleston Southern Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
