September 30, 2015 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Despite inclement weather in the area over the last couple days, the East Carolina baseball team under direction of second-year head baseball coach Cliff Godwin, officially opened fall practice last weekend.
The Pirates, who began individual workouts in late August, were set to start team practice on Friday, Sept. 25 but weather conditions forced Godwin to reschedule practice and scrimmage sessions. ECU finally got on the field in a team environment on Sunday, Sept. 27 for a brief scrimmage and weather pending, will be back on the field today, Wednesday Sept. 30 for its second intra-squad scrimmage starting around 3 p.m. (ET).
Godwin announced Wednesday the dates of the program's annual Purple & Gold World Series, a Fall Meet the Pirates event and the Spring's Evening With the Pirates.
East Carolina's annual fall intra-squad competition, the Purple & Gold World Series, begins Oct. 30 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. The three-game series is free of charge to the fans and will conclude on Nov. 1 with a Fall Meet the Pirates event.
Godwin guided the Pirates to a 40-win season, an American Athletic Conference Tournament title and a berth in the Coral Gables Regional -- its first NCAA Regional since 2012.
The Pirates return 17 letterwinners including Coral Gables All-Regional selection Garrett Brooks, 2015 Freshman All-America and All-AAC Tournament member Joe Ingle, three-time Johnny Bench Award Watch List Travis Watkins, weekend starters Evan Kruczynski and Jacob Wolfe, along with 2014 all-conference performers Bryce Harman and Charlie Yorgen.
Also stepping onto the diamond are 17 newcomers, which consist of five infielders (Turner Brown, Kendall Ford, Brady Lloyd, Wes Phillips and Drew Piscorik), three outfielders (Justin Dirden, Ryan Littlefield and Dwanya Williams-Sutton), one catcher (Jake Washer), six pitchers (Matt Bridges, Cam Colmore, West Covington, Chris Holba, Sam Lanier and Shelton Perkins, Jr.) and a pair of two-way players (Denny Brady and Zack Mozingo).
