GREENVILLE, N.C. ā East Carolina junior Lisa Pettersson (208) carded a final round 71 finishing with an 8-under par to claim the 2016 Pinehurst Challenge individual title Tuesday afternoon. The two-day, 54-hole event was being held at the par-72, 5,974-yard Pinehurst No. 1.
Pettersson, who was named the American Athletic Conference Golfer-of-the-Month in September, fired rounds of 72, 65 and 71 to post a career-low 54-hole total of 208, which is tied for the lowest 54-hole score in school history. She carded five birdies Tuesday to go along with four bogeys and nine pars. Pettersson led the 96-person field in total birdies (17) and par-4 scoring (3.89), while ranking among the tournament leaders in par-5 scoring (t5/4.44) and par-3 scoring (t11/3.11).
Freshman Siranon Shoomee registered her first career Top 5 finish posting three consecutive rounds of 72 for an even par 216. She finished tied for fifth in par-3 scoring (3.00) and tied for ninth in par-4 scoring (4.08), while tallying 34 pars. Fellow classmates Dorthea Forbrigd (74-70-77) and Grace Yatawara (73-74-74) both finished tied for 14th with scores of 221 (5-over).
Sophomore Carley Cox fired a personal-best 54-hole score of 222 (77-73-72) claiming a share of 19th place, while Kate Law finished tied for 31st with a score of 224 (80-70-74). Catherine Ashworth, who played as an individual along with Yatawara, posted a 228 (76-70-82) taking a share of 50th.
The Pirates (37-7) won their second-straight tournament of the season and 28th in the programs history after carding a 3-under par 861, which stands as the third lowest 54-hole score in school history. During second round action, ECU posted a 10-under 277 setting a new 18-hole team record. The Pirates finished seven strokes ahead of Auburn (868) and 20 shots in front Maryland (881). Rounding out the Top 5 were College of Charleston (887) and Samford (888).
ECU will be back in action Oct. 17-18 when they host the Greenville (NC) Regional Preview, which will be held at the Brook Valley Country Club.
