GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team's 2016 campaign concluded with a 2-1 home defeat to 19th-ranked Connecticut in American Athletic Conference action at Johnson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
UConn (16-2-1, 8-0-1 AAC) clinched its second-straight regular season conference championship by outshooting the Pirates, 15-14, overall. ECU owned a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, while both sides earned six corner kicks apiece.
Senior striker Lana Spitler led the purple and gold with five shots and one assist, while junior midfielder Annah Lindberg scored a goal for the second match in a row with her fourth of the season. Senior forward Kelsey Reeves also had an assist for the second time in as many contests.
THE GOALS
11th Minute: Spitler made a short pass to Reeves on a corner kick, who sent a cross across the goal box to find Lindberg who struck a left-footed shot over the top of a leaping goalkeeper and into the back of the net to put ECU in front, 1-0.
26th Minute: The Huskies responded approximately 15 minutes later when Kim Urbanek got to the center of the Pirate defense and touched a pass to her right to Stephanie Ribeiro, who fired a shot from the 18-yard line and past a diving Caroline Jeffers to tie the match, 1-1.
87th Minute: UConn got on the attack with under five minutes remaining in regulation when Ribeiro ripped a shot from approximately 10 yards out that deflected off a pile of players comprising a fallen Husky striker, Jeffers and an ECU defender to the right of the goal. Ribeiro collected the rebound from approximately five yards out and nudged a second attempt with the outside of her right foot that lifted just across the goal line and into the net for what turned out to be the game's deciding goal.
HEAD COACH ROB DONNENWIRTH QUOTES
"I just want to thank the seniors because they meant a lot to this program. It was a hard year for them. I give them credit because coming into the year, they knew we were going to be without three key kids and they never complained about it, they worked hard and they were good leaders.
"As far as the game today, it was sort of like a microcosm of a lot of our games this season. We're in every game. At times, we have momentum and at times they have momentum. The bottom line is, we didn't end up on the right end of the scoreboard a lot of times."
