
Montes And McRae Named October Student-Athletes Of The Month

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina senior cross country runner Jorge Montes and senior volleyball middle hitter Ashley McRae have been selected the male and female Student-Athletes of the Month following an outstanding October athletically.

Montes was the top Pirate male finisher in both meets during the month, including a 12th-place individual result at the American Athletic Conference Championship Oct. 29 where he earned his third consecutive All-AAC honor (top 15 runners). The senior also took 130th place at the prestigious Paul Short Run Oct. 1 in a field of nearly 350 competitors.

The men's and women's cross country teams return to action Nov. 11 at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Va.

McRae averaged 2.50 kills and 0.79 blocks per set and hit .356 during nine matches in October. She tallied double-digit kills in four matches, including 15 in ECU's 3-1 victory at Tulane Oct. 13 which marked the Pirates' first-ever win in New Orleans. McRae also came up big in the five-set win over UConn Oct. 23 when she put down 17 kills and hit .538 while adding six blocks.

In terms of the East Carolina career top 10 list, McRae currently ranks first in hitting percentage (.319) and is tied for seventh in total blocks (298).

The volleyball squad continues conference play this weekend with a pair of matches at UConn and Temple.
