LAST TIME OUT
East Carolina (9-15, 3-9 AAC) suffered its fifth-straight defeat in heartbreaking fashion, 74-67, at SMU on Tuesday night. Marina Laramie led the Pirates with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Jada Payne added 15 points and nine boards and DeVaughn Gray chipped in 13 points. Payne passed Jasmine Young (2005-09) for the No. 4 spot on ECU's all-time scoring list and now has 1,595 points in a Pirate uniform. The Mustangs' Morgan Bolton sunk a desperation, turnaround three-pointer as time expired to the send game to overtime, where they outscored the Pirates, 11-4.
ALL-TIME VERSUS MEMPHIS
The Pirates and Tigers are tied, 12-12, in the all-time series, as each side won their respective home contest in 2014-15. Last season, Memphis scored a miraculous 60-57 comeback win in overtime on Jan. 4, but East Carolina countered with a resounding 60-39 home victory just 14 days later. Jada Payne averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, while I'Tiana Taylor put up 8.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and four steals during those two matchups.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (14-10, 8-5 AAC) has won back-to-back games and five of its last six following a 69-52 road victory at UCF on Wednesday night. The Tigers are led by junior guard Ariel Hearn's 14 points, 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game, while sophomore guard Mooriah Rowser is averaging 11.8 points on 45.8-percent shooting through 14 conference games. Memphis is shooting just under 42 percent overall and scores 64 points per game as a team.
PAYNE NAMED TO DAWN STALEY AWARD WATCH LIST
Jada Payne was one of just 16 players to be named to the 2016 Dawn Staley Award Mid-Season Watch List on Jan. 28.
