ECU Men Extend Their Lead At The American Championships

HOUSTON - The East Carolina men's swimming and diving team extended its lead after the third of four days of competition Friday at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship, which is being held at the University of Houston. The Pirates registered two first place-finishes with nine total medal finishes in six events.
East Carolina has scored 612.50 points and leads The American Championship by 54 points over SMU, which is in second place with 558.50 points. Cincinnati is third with 448 points and Cincinnati is fourth with 416 points.
After Matt Mullen claimed the bronze medal in the 3-meter diving competition, the Pirates finished one and two in the 400-yard IM. Boleck De Pawlikowski captured the gold medal with a time of 3:47.99, finishing almost four seconds ahead of teammate Julien Dodu (3:51.55).
In the 100-yard butterfly, Adam Dear and William Hicks finished second and third, respectively, behind SMU's Sam Straughan who posted a time of 47.11. Dear earned the silver medal with a time of 48.09, touching 0.10 ahead of Hicks. East Carolina also registered a two-three finish in the 200-yard freestyle with Michael Dugan claiming the silver medal with a NCAA B qualifying time of 1:35.88, while John Myhre earned the bronze in a time of 1:37.79.
Hicks picked up the Pirates' second win of the night in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 53.26, touching 81-hundredths of a second ahead of Cincinnati's Ludovico Corsini.
Fran Krznaric earned his second individual medal of the championship winning the silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 47.87.
On the women's side, ECU (342.50) moved up to fifth-place Friday night moving 3.5 points ahead of sixth-place UConn (339). SMU leads the ladies field by 13.5 points over Tulane. The Mustangs have amassed 454 points, while the Green Wave has collected 440.50 points. Houston sits in third-place with 381 points followed by Cincinnati with 351.
Bailie Monahan posted the Pirates' lone medal finish on Friday finishing third in the women's 100-yard butterfly with a NCAA B qualifying time of 54.13.
The final day of the 2016 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships begins with preliminary swimming events at 10 a.m. CT, followed by men's and women's platform diving preliminaries at 12:30 CT. The finals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
