BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - East Carolina senior jumper Avion Jones claimed his second-straight American Athletic Conference indoor conference high jump title Monday as the Pirates concluded action at the AAC Indoor Championships inside the Birmingham Crossplex.
The women improved four spots from last year's meet to end up in fifth place with 57 points while the men took seventh with 58 points. The Houston men and UConn women successfully defended their 2015 team titles.
"We accomplished all the goals that we set out to do before this weekend started," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We set multiple school records, had conference champs, set numerous lifetime bests and finished in the top half of the league. We also put numerous athletes on the podium all weekend long."
Jones surpassed his own meet-record mark of 2.14 meters, finishing at 2.21m to blow away the field. He also took third place in the triple jump with a mark of 15.18m to bring home Men's Field Performer of the Meet honors. In the women's high jump, junior Lauren Lubarski turned in a personal best of 1.75m to capture the bronze medal.
The Pirates had a pair of podium finishers in the 60-meter hurdles as seniors Cheyenne Hutchinson and Demonte Wilson produced respective times of 8.41 and 7.93 to both earn third place.
Sophomore Galissia Cause broke her own program record in the shot put, checking in at 15.48m to end up third.
"As a coaching staff, you're never satisfied with how your teams finish in the league unless you win it," Kraft added. "We have work to do before the outdoor season begins. Overall, it was a productive weekend."
