PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- East Carolina senior Prince Williams has been named the American Athletic Conference Most Improved Player announced league officials Wednesday. Williams is the first ECU player to earn a major American Athletic Conference award since the Pirates joined the league in 2014-15.
Williams ranked fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.418) sixth in assists per game (3.8) and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2). Williams averaged 10.3 points per game this season after averaging 1.6 a year ago. He scored 238 more points in 2015-16 compared to his junior campaign with an additional 97 assists. He's distributed 119 dimes this season, ranking just outside the ECU single-season top-10.
Williams made 38 3-pointers during the 2015-16 regular season, burying 31 of those in the final 13 games. He made a mere eight 3-pointers in his first three years in the program. He recorded his first career double-double on Jan. 24 at Memphis with 20 points and 10 assists. He ranks eighth on the school's career assists list with 276.
He's scored double figures in 12 games this season with four 20-point performances and led East Carolina in scoring six times.
East Carolina opens the 2016 American Basketball Championship Thursday against USF at 3:30 p.m. inside the Amway Center in Orlando. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
