CLEARWATER, Fla. - East Carolina senior Jimmy Boyd and freshman Dwanya Williams-Sutton have been named American Athletic Conference Pitcher and Player-of-the-Week according to an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.
Boyd, a two-time weekly selection, earned his team-leading seventh win in a series clinching victory at UCF on Friday, May 20. The right-hander allowed one run (unearned) on five hits with seven strikeouts in seven full innings of work. He struck out at least one batter in 5 of 7 innings including the side in the second frame. Boyd, who tallied his eighth quality start of the year, induced six ground outs and seven fly outs, while facing four or fewer batters in 6 of 7 frames (five in the sixth inning).
Williams-Sutton garnered his first career league honor after batting a team-best .615 (8-for-13) in ECU's three game sweep at UCF. He reached base nine times in 14 plate appearances, tallied game-winning RBI with a two-run triple in Friday's 7-1 win and hit for the cycle on the weekend. The rookie belted his team-leading fifth home run in the series finale, a solo shot, where he also collected four hits. In the series, he drove in three runs, scored three time, slugged an impressive 1.154 and had a .643 on-base percentage.
The selections by Boyd and Williams-Sutton marks the fourth pitching weekly honor and first hitting accolade for the Pirates this season. Boyd joins Wolfe as a two-time selection this season.
The Pirates (34-19-1) will open the 2016 American Baseball Championships on Wednesday, May 25 at Bright House Field against No. 7 seed USF (23-31) with an 11 a.m. (ET) scheduled first pitch.
